Girls Game

Boys -vs- Attleboro
(Norton-6, Attleboro-11)
4/27/17

The Lancers were able keep this game close until the third quarter. The biggest frustration was the inability to score in extra man opportunities. Attleboro had 6 minutes of penalties in the first half, but we were only able to tally one goal for a 4-1 halftime score.

We lost the third quarter 6-2 making the score 10-3 going into the fourth. This proved to be our best part of the game scoring three times and holding them to one goal which came in the last minute when we had to over extend our defense.

Other than the fourth quarter, there were some other positives to take from this game. All six goals we're assisted. Seven different players scored points with either a goal or an assist. Nick Joyce had another good game stopping almost any shot that was beyond ten yards and finishing with 15 saves.
Boys -vs- Advanced Math and Science Academy
(Norton-5, Advanced Math and Science Academy-4)
4/24/17

Our games against AMSA are always close in scores. The first contest with them this season proved to be the same. Both teams played well defensively.

Nick Joyce was able to finish with 16 saves for a 80% save percentage.  Rylie Coffey earned the game ball with two goals and an assist, which made him responsible for 60% of the scoring.

Boys -vs- Stoughton
4/20/17 (Norton-8, Stoughton-3)

After loosing one of our key defenders to injury in our previous game, we lost another to a rolled ankle in practice. We also had another defender away with his family for spring break. So we went into our game against Stoughton with concern regarding defending our goal. Our younger players stepped up and answered the call. Nick Joyce was only asked to make four saves.  Kevin Murphy, a first year player, ended up with the game ball.
Boys -vs- Northbridge
4/18/17

Our game in Northbridge turned out to be one of those we would like to get back. They jumped out to a significant lead that we never answered. We also lost one of our players, Ryan Eykel, indefinitely to injury when he took a shot to the throat.  After two days in the hospital, it looks like he will be okay. Hopefully we will get him back in time for our rematch with Northbridge later this season.
Boys - Week of April 10
Since the last blog we have played three games.  Two of these opponents, Rockland (15-3) and Ashland (19-3),  are teams that we are intending to compete with better at the end of the season.  Bellingham (12-9), which was the second of the three games, proved to be an opponent much closer to our  present level of growth.

Rockland and Ashland both came out and scored early and often before we were able to get our legs under us.  We will see both teams later in the season and will strive to be more competitive from the start of the game.

The Bellingham game was very close from the beginning  of the game until about midway through the fourth quarter.   We were able to score the first goal with freshman attackman Dean Santangello's first goal of the season.  Bellingham found the net to quickly tie the score.  We spent the rest of the next two quarters going ahead by one goal and allowing them to tie the score.  Finally in the forth quarter, Joe Weber scored to put us up by two goals.  Then Shaun Murphy found Josh Fuller for the assisted goal that put the game out of reach with 2:22 left in the game.

Tuesday we travel to Northbridge.

Girls- vs - Rockland
4/10/17 (Norton-8,     Rockland-7)

Boys - vs - Dedham
4/5/17 (Norton-5,     Dedham-2)

Going into this season, the biggest concern for the Lancers was defense.  Game number two on the schedule answered some of those concerns.  It turned out to be a challenging day for the offense.  There were several unforced turnovers, and the Dedham defense played well.  The Norton defense was able to keep Dedham from taking a lead even though they kept within one or two points throughout most of the game.  Nick Joyce played extremely well finishing with 12 saves for 85%.   Joe Weber tallied 9 ground balls and scored the final goal in the last couple of minutes of the game to put it out of reach.

With a few days to regroup and prepare for the next game on Monday at Rockland, the Lancers will be working on taking better care of the ball and finding the opponent's net more often.

Boys vs Taunton

Boys vs Taunton     April 3, 2017
(Norton-12,  Taunton -3)

After two weeks of practices it was time to compete against opponents rather than teammates. The boys took the first quarter to find some rhythm. It was unclear if it was first game jitters, difficulty getting off the bus or rust from lack of field practice due to weather.  Once we started scoring, it seemed to get easier as the game progressed. The top scorers ended up being Josh Fuller (5 g/1a), Joe Weber (2g), and Shaun Murphy (2g). The defense also improved as the game advanced giving up only one goal in the second half. Nick Joyce finished the game with 9 saves for a 75% of shots on cage.
Next game: Dedham on Wednesday at 4:00
